Logical Witch, Chapter 1
翔子と別れたあと、シフトの時間より少し早めに家を出た咲太は、真っ直ぐバイト先のファミレスには向かわずに、駅前の家電量販店の建物に足を踏み入れた。
Not long after Shouko went home, Sakuta also headed out—but it was a little early for his shift at the restaurant, so he stopped at the electronics store by the station.
最新のスマホがずらりと並んだフロアを通り抜けてエスカレーターで上を目指す。オーディオフロア、白物家電フロアには見向きもせずに、ひたすら上へ。
The first floor was all new-model smartphones, so he breezed right past those on his way to the escalator. He kept on climbing, not even glancing at the floors for audio or major appliances.
七階に到着すると雰囲気は一変した。この階と上の八階は品揃えの豊富な書店になっているのだ。
Once he reached the seventh floor, the whole vibe changed. This floor and the eighth floor were home to an especially well-stocked bookstore.
広いフロアには整然と本棚が並び、隙間なく本で埋められている。専門書を扱う七階は客の年齢層が高く、落ち着いた雰囲気がある。どこかの図書館のようですらあった。
Row after row of bookshelves filled the large space, each packed to the brim with books. The seventh floor was focused on specialty books, and the customer base was getting on in years, so it was always quiet and calm. Like a library.
その中を、咲太は本棚と本棚の間を確認しながら歩いた。
Sakuta made his way through the shelves, checking the contents.
別に探している本があるわけではない。
He wasn't looking for anything in particular.
翔子が帰ったあと、彼女のことを相談しようと思い、同級生である双葉理央に連絡したところ、
After Shouko left, he'd called Rio Futaba to ask for advice.
「今、家電量販店の上の本屋にいるから出てきたら」
"I'm in the bookstore above the electronic shop. Meet me here."
と言われたのだ。
She'd said.
その理央の姿はどこにも見当たらない。てっきり、物理学の本が並んだコーナーにいると思っていたのだが、その前にいたのは、髪を結った峰ヶ原高校の制服を着た別の女子生徒だった。
But he didn't see her anywhere. He'd imagined she'd be in the section with all the science books, but instead he found a different girl in a Minegahara uniform there, with her hair up.
仕方がなくフロアをぐるりと一周する。やはり、理央は見つからなかった。
He did another loop of the floor but still couldn't spot Rio.
「こういうとき、ケータイあると便利だよな」
"A cell phone sure would come in handy here..."
メールにしろ、電話にしろ、無料通話アプリのメッセージにしろ、リアルタイムで居場所を確認できる。
Text, call, or some free messaging app— there would've been any number of ways he could ask where she was.
もう一周しようかと物理学の本棚の脇を通り抜けると、
As he passed the science corner again.
「梓川」
"Azusagawa."
と、後ろから声をかけられた。
A voice called out from behind.
立ち止まって振り返る。
He stopped and turned around.
「素通りして、なんかの嫌がらせ？」
"Are you walking right past me out of spite?"
不機嫌そうな顔で咲太を見ていたのは、先ほど見かけた峰ヶ原高校の夏服を着た女子生徒。よく見れば彼女が理央だった。
It was the girl from before, in the summer Minegahara uniform. She was scowling back at him, and when he looked closer... it was Rio.
「双葉？」
"Futaba?"
「夏の太陽で頭がいかれたらしいね」
"Did the summer sun fry your brain?"
呆れた様子で理央がため息を吐く。見慣れた制服。さすがに学校外なので白衣は着ていない。だが、二度も視界に収めながらも、咲太が素通りしてしまった理由は服装以外にある。
Rio heaved an exasperated sigh. She was wearing the school uniform. It made sense that she didn't wear her usual white lab coat outside of school. But it wasn't only her clothes that had made Sakuta walk past her twice.
髪型がいつもと違っているのだ。普段は無造作に下ろしている髪を、今は後ろでまとめている。首筋からうなじまでの日焼けとは無縁の白い肌が惜しげもなく晒されていた。理央は常に露出が控えめなので、たったそれだけでもなんだか色気を感じた。
Her hair was different. She normally just let it hang straight, but now it was tied up at the back, revealing the nape of her neck—skin so pale it had clearly never been exposed to the light of the sun. Rio generally exposed as little skin as possible, so even this modest display was weirdly erotic.
「下ろしてると暑いんだよ」
"It's too hot to leave down,"
咲太の視線に気づいた理央は、質問するより先に理由を教えてくれた。理由も実に理央らしい合理的なもの。
she said, catching his look and preempting his unspoken question. As expected of Rio. What a logical reason.
だが、咲太の疑問はそれひとつではない。次に気になったのは理央の目元だ。
However, there was something else on Sakuta's mind. His gaze shifted to her eyes next.
「眼鏡をしてないのは、今日はコンタクトだから」
"And I don't have my glasses because I'm wearing contacts today."
今度も聞く前に答えが返ってきた。髪型が違って、眼鏡もしていないと、理央の印象はかなり違う。ただ、淡々と疑問に答えてくれた態度や口調は、咲太のよく知る理央そのものだった。
Once again, she didn't even let him ask. With her new hairstyle and no glasses, Rio looked really different. But her flat answers and emotionless voice proved that this was the Rio he knew.
「なんで制服？」
"Why the uniform?"
最後の疑問だけは、口に出せた。理央に限って言えば、女子高生を売り物にするために休日も着用しているわけではないだろう。
The last question was the only one he managed to say out loud. At least in Rio’s case, she probably wasn’t wearing it on her day off just to sell the image of a high school girl.
「このあと学校」
"I'm stopping by school after this."
「国見なら、僕と一緒にバイトだからいないぞ」
"If you're looking for Kunimi, me and him have a shift this afternoon."
「部員ひとりの科学部は活動実績を残しておかないと即廃部になるんだよ」
"A science club with only one member has to show some activity records, or it'll be shut down immediately."
恨みがましい目で理央が睨んでくる。
That earned him a frosty glare.
「で、梓川の用事っていうのは？」
"And? What did you want?"
「ん、ああ。それなんだが……」
"Oh, uh... about that….."
「また例の厄介ごと？」
"Trouble again?"
興味などなさそうに本棚から一冊の本を取り出すと、理央はぱらぱらとめくった。咲太には縁遠い量子力学の本だ。
she asked, seeming bored already. She pulled a book off the shelf and started flipping through it. Something about quantum physics that Sakuta would likely never understand a word of.
「そうかもしれないし、そうじゃないかもしれない」
"Maybe, maybe not."
「煮え切らないね」
"Spit it out, then."
「牧之原翔子に会った」
"I ran into Shouko Makinohara,"
単刀直入に用件をさらっと口にする。
he said, getting right to the point.
「……」
"....."
その名前を聞いて、理央は本を開いたまま咲太に視線を向けてきた。瞳に驚きを宿している。前に、牧之原翔子についての話は理央に伝えてある。咲太にとっては初恋の人物。彼女を追いかけて峰ヶ原高校を受験したこと。でも、彼女は学校にはいなくて、卒業した痕跡はおろか、在籍していた記録も残っていなかったこと。そんなわけのわからない状態のまま、咲太は結果的に失恋をしたこと。その全部を理央は知っているのだ。
That name pulled her attention away from the book. There was a look of surprise in her eyes. He'd told Rio about Shouko Makinohara before— how she was his first love and how he'd taken the Minegahara entrance exams because she was a student there. But not only was she not at the school, there were no signs she'd graduated or ever attended. And with no clue what had happened, Sakuta had been left nursing a broken heart. Rio knew all of that.
「彼女、実在したんだ」
"She actually exists?"
だからこそ、理央がそう感想を零した気持ちもわかる。咲太自身も、もう二度と会うことはないと思っていた。彼女が出てくる夢だって、もう一年近くも見ていなかったのだ。
This was a reasonable reaction. Sakuta himself had been convinced they'd never meet again. He hadn't even dreamed about her for over a year.
「しかも、驚いたことに、中学一年生になってた」
"And the most surprising part is that she's in her first year of junior high."
「は？」
"Huh?"
理央が素っ頓狂な声を上げる。持っていた本を落としそうになっていた。
Rio squeaked. She almost dropped her book.
「二年前に会ったときは、高二だったのに、一学期の最終日に再会したら、中一になってた」
"Two years ago, she was in her second year of high school, but when I ran into her two weeks ago, she was in the first year of junior high."
「梓川、正気？」
"Have you gone completely insane?"
「残念ながら」
"I'm afraid not."
「だとしたら、計算が合わないね」
"Then the math doesn't add up."
二年前に高校二年生だったのだから、ストレートに進学していたら今は大学一年生でないとおかしい。それが、中学一年生に逆戻りしているのだ。
A second-year high school student two years ago would be a first-year college student now. Instead, she'd somehow gone back to junior high.
「梓川のことは？」
"Does she remember you?"
「覚えてない……ってか、前に会ったことなんか知らない感じ」
"No... Doesn't seem to think we've ever met."
実際、出会った直後に、「はじめまして」と挨拶を交わしている。
She'd straight up said, "Nice to meet you."
「……」
"......"
理央は難しい顔で考え込んでいる。
Rio mulled over this.
「梓川」
"Azusagawa,"
しばらくして、視線だけこちらによこした。
she said, looking up at him again.
「ん？」
"Mm?"
「よく似た同姓同名の他人なんじゃないの？」
"You sure she isn't someone else with the same name who happens to look similar?"
「それが一番可能性高いよな、そりゃあ」
"That is the most likely possibility, yes."
咲太も一度は考えたことだ。考えはしたが、こんな偶然があるだろうか。
Sakuta had thought about it but decided that was too big a coincidence.
「世界には同じ顔をした人間が三人いるらしいよ」
"Supposedly, there's always at least three people with the same face as yours out in the world."
「んなのよくある都市伝説だろ」
"That's just an urban legend."
「そうだね。よくある都市伝説」
"Right. Just an urban legend,"
理央がふと視線を逸らした。何気ない仕草。別に気にするほどのことではないが、咲太はなぜだか気になった。今の話に、理央の感情が動く理由があったとは思えなかったからだ。いつもなら、素っ気無く笑い飛ばす場面のような気がした。
Rio repeated, looking away. There was nothing particularly odd about that, nothing that was noteworthy—but for some reason, Sakuta noticed. Probably because he didn't think what they'd just said would usually provoke an emotional response from her. It was the sort of thing she'd normally dismiss impassively.
「双葉？」
"Futaba?"
「あと可能性があるとすれば、その子は牧之原翔子の妹で、わけあって姉の名前を名乗っているとか？」
"The other possibility is that she's Shouko Makinohara's sister and going by her older sister's name for some reason."
なんでもないように理央が話を続ける。だから、この場で言及するのは諦めた。
Rio just kept talking like nothing had happened, so Sakuta let it drop for the moment.
「どんなわけだよ」
"What kind of reason?"
設定が複雑すぎる。
That seems awfully elaborate.
「それは梓川が本人に聞けばいい」
"You'd have to ask her."
「あんまり変な質問をしてると、変なやつだと思われる」
"If I ask too many weird questions, she'll think I'm a weirdo."
「私に害はないからいいんじゃない？」
"So? That's fine by me."
「僕がよくないと言ってるんだ」
"I'm saying it's bad for me!"
「桜島先輩以外にもいい顔をしたいとは意外だね」
"I'm surprised you care what anyone but Sakurajima thinks."
「言っておくが、中学一年の女の子に欲情したりはしないからな」
"Just to be clear, I'm not gunning for a twelve-year-old."
「それは、どっちでもいいけど。もうひとつ可能性をあげるとすれば、実は二年前に出会った牧之原翔子は、梓川がその時点から未来を見ていたものだった……というパターンかな」
"I don't really care either way. I suppose the one remaining possibility is that the Shouko Makinohara you met two years ago was a vision of the future from that point in time."
「あの現象の原因は僕じゃない」
"But I'm not the cause of that phenomenon."
未来のシミュレーション現象は、古賀朋絵が起こした思春期症候群だ。同じ学校に通うひとつ下の後輩。桃尻のかわいい後輩だ。
Simulations of the future were the product of Tomoe Koga's Adolescence Syndrome. She was a year below them at school—a cute kohai with a peach butt.
「一緒に体験した梓川が発生源という説も完全には否定できていないと思うけどね」
"Since you both experienced the same thing, I don't think we can completely deny the possibility you helped generate that phenomenon."
「だとしても、それだと今度は僕の年齢が合わないだろ」
"If that was involved here, then my age wouldn't add up."
「だね。でもさ……今のところ実害はないんでしょ？」
"Right. But…..right now, it's not harming anyone, right?"
「まあ、ないな」
"Doesn't seem to be."
麻衣や朋絵のときとは根本的にそこが違う。これが思春期症候群なのかどうかもわからないが、現段階では何もまずいことにはなっていない。
That was a clear difference from Mai's and Tomoe's situations. This time it wasn't even clear if Adolescence Syndrome was involved, and it wasn't causing any problems he could see.
理央は本を閉じて元の位置に戻すと、また別の本を取った。その脇を浴衣姿の女子二人組が通り過ぎていった。
Rio closed the book and put it back on the shelf before reaching for another one. Two girls in yukata walked past them.
レポートがどうのと話していたので大学生だろうか。参考になる資料を捜しに来たのかもしれない。
They were talking about reports—-probably college students, here looking for reference books.
その後ろ姿を目で追っていると、
Sakuta's gaze followed them.
「梓川、見すぎ」
"Don't stare, Azusagawa," Rio snapped.
と、理央に鋭く指摘された。
"You don't wear yukata if you don't want people looking."
「ああいうのは、誰かに見てもらうために着るもんだろ」
"Doesn't mean they want you looking."
「少なくとも、その相手は梓川じゃないだろうけどね」
"Is there a fireworks display tonight?"
「今日、どっかで花火やるんだな」
"Chigasaki."
「茅ヶ崎が今日」
"You knew that offhand?"
「よく知ってるな」
"There's a sign right over there."
「そこに書いてある」
Rio pointed at a nearby wall. Two stops down the Tokaido Line from Fujisawa Station, fireworks over Sagami Bay on the beach at Chigasaki.
目で理央が示したのは脇の壁。藤沢駅からは東海道線で二駅隣……相模湾に面した茅ヶ崎の海岸で行われる花火大会のポスターが貼られていた。開催日は八月二日。確かに今日だ。
August 2. Today.
「そういや、去年、行ったよな。花火大会」
"Come to think of it, we all went to the fireworks last year."
八月の二十日前後に行われる江の島の納涼花火大会。
The Enoshima Evening Fireworks, held on... maybe August 20.
その日、バイトが夕方上がりだった咲太と佑真は、帰りがけに店長から花火大会のことを聞かされたのだ。男ふたりで行くのも寂しいという話の流れで理央に声をかけた。当時は、まだ佑真も上里沙希とは付き合っていなかった。
Sakuta and Yuuma had finished their shifts in the evening, and on the way out, their boss had mentioned the fireworks display. Figuring it would just be sad for two guys to go, they'd called up Rio. This was before Yuuma started dating Saki Kamisato.
「そうだね」
"Yeah,"
理央は離れていく浴衣女子の背中を無感動に見ていた。
Rio said, watching the yukata girls dispassionately.
「あのときの双葉、私服だったよな」
"You wore normal clothes, though."
「梓川もね」
"So did you."
「国見と一緒に期待してたのに」
"Kunimi and I both got our hopes up, too."
その頃から、理央が佑真に好意を抱いていたのは知っている。というか、確かあの日に気づいたのだ。花火を見上げる佑真の横顔を、理央は横目で見ていたから。
He'd already been well aware Rio had feelings for Yuuma. Or maybe that was the day he figured it out. He'd caught her staring at Yuuma while he gazed up at the fireworks.
「もったいぶらずに着てくればよかったのに」
"You shouldn't have played coy! Yukata are always the right choice."
「どうして私が梓川のために、そんな面倒なことをしなくちゃいけないわけ？」
"Why would I wear something that cumbersome?"
「国見に見せるためだよ」
"So Kunimi could see it."
「……」
......"
理央が不愉快そうな視線を向けてくる。
Rio glanced away, visibly unhappy.
「どの道、私には似合わない」
"I wouldn't look good in one."
「そうか？」
"Really?"
「そう」
"Really."
「あ、浴衣って胸が大きいとダメなんだっけ？」
"Oh, right, big boobs work against yukata."
理央の場合、制服の上からでも、大きくふくらんでいるのがわかる。
Even in uniform, Rio's were clearly impressive.
「そういう意味で言ったんじゃない」
"That's not what I meant,"
理央が本で胸元をそれとなくガードした。見られるのはあまり好きではなさそうだ。
Rio said, putting her arms up. She didn't seem to appreciate his looking.
「なら、どういう意味？」
"Then what did you mean?"
「答える必要はないね」
"I see no reason to tell you."
「なんで？」
"Why not?"
「梓川は理由を察した上で、私に言わせようとしてるから」
"Because you already know and you're just trying to make me say it."
「地味な自分がするような格好じゃないとか思っているなら大間違い」
"If you think you're too plain to dress up like that, you're sorely mistaken."
「……」
"....."
理央の視線が真意を聞いてくる。
Rio's look suggested she doubted his word.
「今の髪型で浴衣着たら、かなりいいと思うけどな」
"A yukata with this hairstyle would work quite well."
アップにした髪と浴衣は大変相性が良さそうだ。
The hair-up/yukata combo was a classic.
「それに、一度は着ようとしたんだろ？」
"And you tried it on at least once, right?"
「……」
"......"
露骨に理央が警戒を示す。
She was really on guard now.
「それ、どういう意味？」
"What's that supposed to mean?"
「双葉の口ぶりからして、浴衣は持ってそうだし」
"The way you're talking, you definitely own one."
「何を根拠にそう思うわけ？」
"What gives you that idea?"
その質問は肯定したのと同じだ。
This question amounted to an admission.
「持ってなかったら、似合う似合わない以前に、『持ってない』っていう根本的な理由を答えるのが双葉なんだよ」
"If you didn't, you wouldn't be talking about whether it looks good; you'd just say you don't have one. That's the way you think."
いつも理屈と本質で理央は話をするのだ。
Rio always spoke logically, getting to the heart of the matter.
「……ほんと、梓川のそういうところは小賢しいね」
'..You're really too clever sometimes, Azusagawa."
「本気で嫌そうな顔するなよ」
"Don't look so annoyed."
「それは無理。本気で嫌だから」
"Impossible. You're an upsetting person."
「酷いこと言うね」
"Harsh."
咲太の苦笑いは無視して、理央は本棚から『量子テレポーテーションの未来』と題された一冊の本を抜き取った。
But she ignored him, picking up a book called The Future of Quantum Teleportation.
「もういいね。私、行くから」
"If that's all, then I'm off,"
と言って、レジの方へと歩き出す。
she said and turned toward the registers.
咲太はその背中に、「相談乗ってくれて、サンキュ」と声をかけた。
"Thanks for your help," Sakuta called after her.
